Salsa: Made in New York
HISTORY | AUDIO / VISUAL TIME LINE | AUDIO INTERVIEW: JOHNNY PACHECO | AUDIO INTERVIEW: LA INDIA | SLIDE SHOW: SALSA POSTERS | BEGINNING

Talking Music is a multimedia investigation of artists, trends and themes in popular music.
Salsa is an international music, popular worldwide, with bands from places as diverse as Africa, Venezuela, Colombia, even Japan. But the global Latin music style we know today had its genesis and got its name in a specific time and place -- New York City in the 1970's -- where musicians fused Caribbean, African, jazz and soul elements into an urban Latin style that captured new listeners and dancers. For many, the classic recordings of that time remain some of the most durable and inspirational in all of Latin music.

This feature, which explores the history and development of salsa, includes a time line and audio interviews with two of the music’s most popular artists -- salsa pioneer Johnny Pacheco and contemporary singer La India. Each part of this feature includes sound clips of music by artists who helped establish the hard-driving, rhythmic Latin sound unique to this city.
