Online News Association and 3M partner to recognize excellence in science journalism

Submissions open May 5 for new prize category in the 2022 Online Journalism Awards

The Online News Association (ONA) is pleased to introduce the 3M Truth in Science Award as the newest category in the Online Journalism Awards (OJAs). The award features a total of $21,000 in cash prizes over three years, and is part of a new partnership with 3M to address the consequences of misinformation. 3M and ONA will collaborate on toolkits, training and recognition that inspire and support journalists to better connect with their audiences about science and misinformation.

The 3M Truth in Science Award will honor science journalism that demonstrates excellence in educating and engaging audiences across issues such as health and wellness, climate change, scientific innovation, STEM education and careers and the role of science in society. Entries may involve a variety of mediums, including a combination of writing, photography, data visualization, video or audio.

OJA judges will consider five criteria:

  • Quality of the journalism
  • Use of facts in an easily understandable way for the identified audiences
  • Digital production and design
  • Engagement and delivery strategy
  • Impact on society

The call for submissions to the 2022 OJAs will be open May 5–June 9. Work published between June 1, 2021, and May 31, 2022, are eligible to enter.

Established in 2000, the OJAs are the only comprehensive set of digital journalism prizes honoring achievement by major media, local newsrooms and individuals around the world. Learn more about the rules and eligibility and award categories.
