New $60,000 investment from SmartNews for the Online Journalism Awards

The Online News Association is pleased to announce continued support from SmartNews will award $60,000 in cash prizes over three years to the winners in the General Excellence category of the Online Journalism Awards (OJAs).

General Excellence AwardFounded in 2012, SmartNews is a leading global information and news discovery company, providing news that matters to millions of users thanks to its unique machine learning technology and relationships with more than 3,000 global publisher partners.

We are proud to partner with SmartNews in recognizing the best of the best in digital journalism. The company has invested in the Online Journalism Awards since 2020. The General Excellence in Online Journalism category honors news organizations that represent the highest journalistic standards and effectively serve their audiences while optimizing digital tools and platforms. Judges select finalists and winners in four newsroom size categories: micro, small, medium and large.

“We at SmartNews are delighted to work with ONA to again sponsor the Online Journalism Awards for General Excellence,” said Rich Jaroslovsky, Vice President for Content and Chief Journalist at SmartNews. “These awards serve to recognize the very best in online news, while setting a clear standard to which everyone can aspire.”

Winners in recent years have included:

  • Mission Local, a small-and-mighty team delivering information in a variety of ways that meet their audiences where they are, including through a texting service, interactive features, audio and more
  • LAist, for a redesign that judges described as “original, colorful, accessible and intelligent, with clear audience engagement signposts”
  • The Trace, for their uniquely focused and ambitious coverage of gun violence
  • The Boston Globe, for their deep focus on a local audience and willingness to experiment.

The ONA community will celebrate winners and finalists in the 2023 competition on Aug. 26 at the Online Journalism Awards Ceremony and Banquet in Philadelphia — a special presentation to close out the ONA23: Philadelphia conference.
