52 Documentary: 22 Episodes of Inspiring Women’s Journeys

About the Project

At the core of VOA’s mission, one of our focuses is empowering women, especially in regions where information is limited or censored. This commitment has been a consistent priority for the organization, exemplified by initiatives like the 52 Documentary series—a project designed to unite global audiences through captivating human-interest stories that reflect this dedication.

In the year 2023, the 52 Documentary series presented 22 impactful stories highlighting resilient women from diverse regions across Africa, Asia, South Central Asia, Eurasia, and Latin America. These stories shed light on inspiring women who defy injustice with unwavering determination, aiming to provide women with the information they need for informed decision-making. The Women’s Empowerment playlist on VOA’s YouTube channel offers a closer look at these stories.

Among the featured narratives are tales like “Softball Warriors,” showcasing the groundbreaking Mayan “Amazonas” softball team challenging gender stereotypes in their conservative community. Through their story, these indigenous women are rewriting societal norms with every swing of the bat.

Another compelling story is “Nairobi Hotline,” which introduces Njeri Wa Migwi’s crucial hotline in Kenya, offering a lifeline to victims of gender-based violence and challenging cultural norms that trivialize such incidents. “A Female Bus Conductor,” the journey of Christine Kangai, a finance graduate in Nairobi, who breaks societal norms by becoming a female bus conductor, striving for financial independence.

“Pretty Loud Women on a Roma group raps” introduces Pretty Loud, an all-female Roma rap band using their music to combat early marriage, promote education, and advocate for social integration among Roma girls. “Olga’s Search” follows a mother’s heartbreaking quest to find her missing son, lost in the war with Ukraine.

The series also documents the inspiring decade-long journey of Ritu, a survivor of an acid attack, becoming a symbol of empowerment for other survivors through learning, practicing karate, and awareness campaigns. “Faii, the Foot Makeup Queen,” introduces Buntida Chinnawong, challenging societal perceptions as a Thai beauty influencer with disabilities applying makeup with her feet.

It extends to K-pop icon Solbi’s resilience in “Painting Through Pain,” exploring how cyberbullying halted her career but did not break her spirit. Instead, she overcame the challenges, using her experience to inspire others and raise awareness.

These documentaries, enriched with captivating visuals and compelling stories, take viewers on a global journey, fostering comprehension and empowerment. Led by Euna Lee, a renowned documentary journalist, the series unfolds weekly. Lee’s personal experience in North Korea, enduring a 140-day detention while capturing footage for a documentary on female North Korean defectors, motivated her to challenge stereotypes and promote cross-cultural understanding.

Her committed team collaborates with global producers in over 15 countries, engaging with individuals dedicated to enhancing their communities, battling injustice, and safeguarding the environment. Through the lens of 52 Documentary, these stories amplify voices that might otherwise remain unheard, advocating for inclusivity and a profound comprehension of our diverse world, promoting cross-cultural understanding. And the team’s commitment to inclusivity for women remains a central and significant focus for 52 Documentary.
