Excellence in Social Media Engagement, Small Newsroom finalist

Capital B’s Instagram

About the Project

At Capital B, we tell stories about Black life that readers won’t find anywhere else. On our Instagram page, those stories come alive. Included in the submission are four standout posts that offer a visual glimpse into the beauty, frustration, and resilience that defines Black experiences in America. There’s the look inside the brutal and relatively unknown inmate rodeo at Louisiana’s Angola Prison; the gripping story of a shoemaker preserving his craft in a dying Gary, Indiana mall; a Black couple fighting to keep their land taken through eminent domain; and a family reclaiming and preserving the site of America’s largest slave revolt. Each story integrates immersive first-person video, original reporting and photography, and social-native visual design to bring the experiences to life. Together, these diverse stories are much more than reflections of the longer articles — they meet people where they are, and spark meaningful conversations about our reporting.
