ChatMigrante is a pioneering AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot developed by Factchequeado to meet a critical information need: providing accurate, up-to-date immigration guidance to Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. This innovative project uses generative artificial intelligence not only to scale access to trusted content, but also to enhance editorial workflows, expand audience engagement, and reduce the impact of misinformation in a high-risk context.
Latinos in the U.S. frequently face barriers when seeking accurate, up-to-date immigration information in Spanish. In a landscape filled with legal jargon, policy changes, and widespread mis- and disinformation and scams, we needed a tool that could deliver verified answers at scale—while maintaining editorial control and cultural relevance.
Built on a robust architecture, ChatMigrante integrates three main components: a bot platform that manages the conversational flow; a curated data base of articles from Factchequeado and official sources; and a real-time analytics dashboard that allows for constant monitoring and improvement.
Unlike conventional uses of large language models (LLMs), which can produce hallucinations or unverified information, ChatMigrante is powered by a carefully curated and continuously updated database of Factchequeado articles and official U.S. government sources. This dynamic content base ensures that every response is grounded in accurate, up-to-date information. The hybrid model—combining generative AI with rigorous editorial oversight—was essential given the complexity of U.S. immigration policy and the high risks posed by misinformation in this domain.
Generative AI is integrated throughout the pipeline: it automates the cleaning and structuring of content, summarizes dense legal information, and tailors responses to users’ natural-language questions.
