Since 2009, the Civil Eats editorial team has published news and commentary about the American food system. We aim to make complicated, underreported stories on topics such as climate change, the environment, agriculture, social justice, animal welfare, policy, health, and the farm bill more accessible to mainstream readers.
We also strive to cover diverse voices and feature people whose stories don’t often make it into the news. We report on the food system’s disproportionate impact on people of color and immigrant communities, and we are one the few media outlets dedicated to reporting on the unique issues facing Indigenous communities.
We launched The Deep Dish, our first members-only newsletter, in September 2021. Delivered exclusively to the people who financially support Civil Eats, The Deep Dish is a direct response to their requests for exclusive articles on the most pressing issues in food facing us today. Every month, our editorial team provides in-depth reporting on a single issue, including sneak peeks at what our editors and reporters are working on, new developments on previously reported stories, unseen photographs from our coverage, tips on what we’re reading, conversations with luminaries, and so much more.
In three of our most-read newsletters in the last year, we chose to spotlight Indigenous foodways and food sovereignty; the efforts underway to provide free and more healthful school meals to U.S. children; and the future of eating out.
Deep Dish is not just a newsletter. They have built a community of subscribers, creating an opportunity to encourage the conversation around the U.S. food system.
The Online Journalism Awards™ (OJAs), launched in May 2000, are the only comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism around the world.
