We launched the Climate Coach newsletter at The Washington Post to answer the question for readers: What can I do about climate change?
This newsletter, helmed by journalist Michael J. Coren, is The Post’s first climate advice email product and primary newsletter for the vertical. The weekly Climate Coach newsletter has an accompanying column tackling issues ranging from why practicing the 2,600-year-old sabbath helps the climate to the cost of EV-fill up in all 50 states.
Each week, the newsletter features a summary of the column, actionable steps, and reviews the top climate news from the Post and elsewhere. This incorporates a friendly and conversational tone, plenty of reader interactions, and a suite of rotating selections including a Biden policy tracker, videos and images from around the world and data visualizations. One of the most popular sections, “Second Degree,” is a forum dedicated for readers’ thoughts and Michael’s responses.
A unique visual identity — as well as the creative use charts, gifs and whimsical visuals art elements — creates a fun (and easy) reading experience that can be enjoyed on mobile or desktop
The column, which the newsletter previews, is often one of the most-read items in The Washington Post. Both the newsletter’s open rate and click exceed the Post’s portfolio average.
The Online Journalism Awards™ (OJAs), launched in May 2000, are the only comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism around the world.
