Submit nominations for the 2020 ONA Community Award

We are delighted to open the call for nominations for the 2020 ONA Community Award. Now in its third year, this award honors an individual or a small team that has made an outsized contribution to digital journalism, often working behind the scenes to enable digital journalists to do their best work.

Previous honorees include OpenNews director Erika Owens, recognized for her work to build community and define career paths for developers and designers in journalism; and the Journalists of Color Slack Administrators (Aaron Williams, Sisi Wei, Tauhid Chappell, Erik Reyna, Julia B. Chan, Lam Thuy Vo and Lo Bénichou) for creating a highly engaged support network where journalists of color connect on project ideas, trending topics in the industry and career opportunities.

We invite ONA members to submit nominations now through July 30, 11:59 p.m ET / 3:59 a.m. UTC.

The selection committee will consider the following characteristics in their evaluation:

  • An under-the-radar person or small team that has created tools or systems that help digital journalists do and showcase their best work
  • A person or small team that has fostered a stronger sense of community among digital journalists, either by rallying the industry together for a cause, connecting news innovators on an influential and impactful project, or developing a community over time
