While reporting in Buffalo over several months in the wake of the May 14, 2022 mass shooting at a Tops supermarket there, one theme was abundantly clear: only the residents of East Buffalo could bring about the change they wanted. Experts like University at Buffalo’s Dr. Henry Taylor shared stories about the millions of dollars coming into East Buffalo, which he believed the surrounding white communities would ultimately absorb.
