Austin is a city of renters: 55 percent of households here rent. The number drops slightly when you look at Travis County. That got KUT’s Audrey McGlinchy wondering: How common are evictions? What she found surprised her. On average, 12 Travis County families are evicted a day from their homes.
The Eviction Lab project helped start a national conversation on the eviction process and the, in some cases, shocking rates at which tenants are removed from their homes. But that database, sprawling as it is, didn’t reflect the full picture here in Central Texas.
“Five Days to Vacate” explores how evictions work and how tenants find themselves in the position of being forced to move out in the Austin area.
