“Overdose: Use Only as Directed” explains how acetaminophen, America’s most popular painkiller, is much more dangerous than people believe, leading to 150 accidental deaths and tens of thousands of hospitalizations a year. What’s more, the FDA and McNeil, the maker of Tylenol, have failed — over decades — to take steps that would reduce the toll.

Exquisitely reported over two years, the material supporting the story included thousands of arcane documents as well as a raft of scientific information.
