The Pudding’s Social Media Video

About the Project

The Pudding is a digital publication that explains ideas debated in culture with visual essays — many of which have the potential to translate really well to social media. We’ve included a sampling of the different types of social media videos (backing music track, voice over, and person narrated) we’ve poduced in the last year:

  • Beyonce / Black women country music: We resurfaced data in a social video from a previous story about representation in country music and timed it to Beyonce’s album release. Tiera Kennedy one fo the artists featured in our video and on Beyonce’s album commented on and shared the video, as did other important people in the country music community like Rissi Palmer and Black Opry.
  • Songwriters and gender: We adapted a video from the begininning of our interactive piece showing just how rare it is for a team of all women songwriters to chart in the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Music genres: We made a Tik-Tok / Instagram reel centered video of our look into Spotify’s music genres.
Judges Comments

The series provided an in-depth data analysis distilled into a snackable, social video that drew in audiences. The judges were especially struck by the effectiveness of the zoom out revealing the lack of representation of black women in country music. Smart to use previously collected data to join the timely conversation on the topic.
