About Arlette Bashizi

Black-and-white portrait of Arlette BashiziArlette Bashizi is a documentary photographer and photojournalist born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and currently based in Goma. Her work focuses on topics related to health, the environment and culture, and she is known for keeping humans, especially women and youth, at the center of her stories. She covers issues as varied as the mining of rare minerals to feed the West’s thirst for electric vehicles to the impact of the DRC conflict and the Tigray Conflict, as well as the destructive nature of climate change in different African countries.

Arlette has contributed to the collaborative project “Congo in Conversation,” curated by Finbarr O’Reilly and recognized as winner of the 11th Carmignac Photojournalism Award. The project that marked the beginning of her professional career in 2020. Since then, her work has appeared in major outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. She is currently a contributor for Reuters and also works as a consultant with international organizations and United Nations agencies.
