City of Smoke

Air Pollution in the Land of the Eternal Blue Sky

About the Project

Ulaanbaatar is the world’s coldest capital, and one of the most polluted cities on earth during the winter. Explore the public health crisis, its causes, surrounding controversy, and future outlook.

I traveled to Mongolia in January 2017 to conduct the reporting, while temperatures dipped to below -35 C. I filmed and carried out on-camera interviews, and shot audio, video, and photos using a Tascam recorder, a Canon 7D DSLR, a DJI Phantom 4 drone, and my iPhone 7Plus. I also conducted all 3D Matterport and Ricoh Theta 360 scans.
