The Rest of World x Context video series takes a look at the brutal challenges that gig workers face around the world. Each film takes viewers into the real lives of people navigating an impossible system fraught with insecurity, anxiety, low wages, high costs, exploitation, and great risk to their physical and mental health. Each of the three stories is unique and local, but the themes are all universal. Gig work can provide economic opportunity, but often, the system ends up harming those most vulnerable.
As the gig economy changes how we work, live, and communicate, it has also led to tens of millions of jobs, creating a new class of workers without the rights or protections most of us take for granted. Now, gig workers are fighting back. From Ho Chi Minh City to Johannesburg to Mexico City, workers are organizing online and offline, building makeshift support systems, and holding companies accountable.
