The Bruen Era

About the Project

Trace reporter Chip Brownlee built a data tracker that analyzes legal shifts in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen decision, compiling and examining all the cases that have cited it since. His analysis revealed critical facts, including the disproportionate number of cases challenging the ban on firearm possession by felons and the tendency for judges handling these cases to show partisan bias.

This series, the most comprehensive examination of post-Bruen Second Amendment cases to date, offers readers a sweeping view of how the decision continues to reverberate across the landscape of gun regulation in the United States — with significant implications for public safety. By revealing concrete new trends, the series also sheds light on the complex and often opaque American court system.
