The Washington Post Universe delivers the news in unique, social-first formats to audiences on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram reels. Journalists Dave Jorgenson, Carmella Boykin and Joseph Ferguson produce, edit and deliver daily short-form videos to audiences that may only interact with The Washington Post on social platforms.
The Washington Post’s Universe accounts delivers the news to more than 2.2 million viewers every day across TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels, highlighting the best of the newsroom to an audience that might not get its news any other way. The majority of the audience is between the ages of 18-34 across all platforms. The team of journalists – Dave Jorgenson, Carmella Boykin and Joseph Ferguson – writes, films, edits and engages with users around daily news stories produced specifically for this purpose, with each video not only helping viewers understand the news but also encouraging them to learn more and ask questions. The team’s engagement goes beyond simply posting each video — to making follow-ups, developing strategies to deliver more information beyond the video, and responding to viewer questions and comments with additional resources. The team also brings custom subscription offers to their audience, building long-term relationships with viewers that translate to subscribers. This entry highlights our range in story selection, each handpicked by the team to maximize audience engagement and educational opportunities. The team takes advantage of quick-turn production methods and day-of production to deliver the news, as it happens, in an engaging and accessible way.
The Online Journalism Awards™ (OJAs), launched in May 2000, are the only comprehensive set of journalism prizes honoring excellence in digital journalism around the world.
