When Lightning Strikes

About the Project

Students in Environmental Journalism class at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications spent the semester reporting on lightning, which kills more people in Florida than any other state. This is the first journalstic project we are aware of that explores how climate change may be making lightning worse. The project blends narrative storytelling; a data analysis of more than 87 million lightning strikes; investigative reporting; interactive graphics; and video storytelling to explain what lightning is, how it can change lives in a split second, how climate change could be impacting it, and what more Florida can do to keep residents and tourists safe from lightning.
