Engage. Inform. Activate.

About the Project

LOOKOUT’s newsletter ecosystem was built to address a growing crisis of trust among LGBTQ+ audiences in Arizona and beyond. Through three distinct newsletters — Eyes on the State, The LOOKOUT Newsletter and The Weekly Kiki — we created a strategy that blends accountability journalism, civic engagement and community connection into products designed specifically for readers who often feel ignored or misrepresented by traditional media.

Each newsletter serves a different purpose while maintaining a shared voice: conversational, accessible, transparent and rooted in service journalism. Together, the newsletters function as a direct pipeline between readers and verified information at a time when many LGBTQ+ people increasingly rely on influencers and social media for news.

Eyes on the State is a weekly legislative newsletter focused on Arizona politics and policy affecting LGBTQ+ communities. During the legislative session, it breaks down bills, hearings and political developments into plain language while offering direct action items for readers, including links to civic engagement trainings, public hearings and Arizona’s online request-to-speak system. The newsletter combines explanatory journalism with practical civic tools to help readers participate in government before legislation is finalized, rather than after laws are passed.

The LOOKOUT Newsletter is a weekly digest of original reporting, investigative work and curated LGBTQ+ journalism from around the country. In addition to highlighting LOOKOUT’s accountability reporting, it elevates ethical and impactful LGBTQ+ coverage from other outlets to help rebuild trust in journalism overall. Each issue includes interactive elements such as a news quiz tied to a reported story, encouraging deeper readership engagement and repeat interaction with our journalism.

The Weekly Kiki focuses on culture and community. It serves as a statewide LGBTQ+ events guide featuring gatherings in urban and rural Arizona alike, from Phoenix and Tucson to Flagstaff, Yuma and the Navajo Nation. Reporters spend hours each week monitoring online forums, social media pages and local event boards to identify inclusive spaces and events that are often underpromoted or difficult to find. The newsletter also includes a candid editorial column discussing the realities of running an LGBTQ+ newsroom in a politically hostile environment, helping humanize the journalists behind the work.

Visually, the newsletters are designed to feel approachable and community-centered rather than corporate. They include bold branding, embedded graphics, quick-link navigation, event listings, quizzes and digestible layouts optimized for mobile readers.

Collectively, these newsletters have become one of LOOKOUT’s most effective audience engagement tools, helping grow readership, deepen trust and create an informed, civically engaged LGBTQ+ audience in Arizona.
