The promises and peril of artificial intelligence was perhaps the most defining technology (and societal) story of the last year. Tech companies poured more than $1 trillion into A.I. investments last year as they raced each other and China for leadership positions. Yet our ai future remains unclear. Companies froze hiring and laid off thousands of workers anticipating economic efficiencies from A.I. agents. Generative A.I. poured into our social media feeds, creating confusion among unsuspecting users and even season journalists trying to sort fact from fiction.
With the story of AI developing at such a rapid clip, Local News International partnered with the Omidyar Network on a series of videos featuring iDave, a character designed to guide viewers through coverage of A.I. iDave tackled everything from states wanting to pass their own A.I regulation, to A.I. powered toys interacting inappropriately with children. iDave also showed how organizations can manipulate the AI answers at the top of search results.
