The Thread was a weekly newsletter that used generative AI to find patterns across 100 to 200 ordinary people’s obituaries each week, then turned those patterns into curated exhibitions exploring how people lived, what they valued, and what they left behind. The obituary archive became a source through which to ask human questions about belonging, labor, grief, migration, joy, memory, and care. The Thread ran for 39 issues from December 2024 through December 2025 and was produced entirely by one journalist, Ethan Ward.
The identified need was scale. One person cannot read and cross-reference 100 to 200 obituaries per week for meaningful connections across geography, profession, age, and life experience. ChatGPT made that possible through a systematic weekly prompt process. The AI received obituaries in batches, analyzed them for recurring themes, and surfaced connections no single reader could find manually. A retired cattle herder in Montana, an Ethiopian social worker, and a Staten Island soprano might appear in the same issue because the AI found something their lives shared.
The creative application went beyond analysis. The AI’s outputs were structured into a digital museum format with themed exhibitions, guided tours, and curatorial framing. An AI character, Echo Weaver, served as the publication’s editorial voice. The museum concept gave pattern recognition a narrative home that made the work accessible and emotionally resonant rather than clinical.
Human agency governed every stage. Ward fact-checked every AI observation against original obituary sources. He conducted original interviews with funeral directors, archivists, and genealogists. He wrote all editorial narrative and made every publishing decision. AI also generated all visual illustrations using Midjourney and DALL-E, but the publication maintained a strict boundary: AI never generated images of deceased individuals. Only abstract, thematic art was used. This policy was explained publicly in the publication’s FAQ.
Random obituary selection meant the AI did not filter for fame, wealth, or status. A bus driver’s legacy received the same analytical attention as a CEO’s.
